Lemony Lace® Elderberry is a striking and low-maintenance shrub that brings vibrant color and texture to your garden. In spring, it produces large clusters of white flowers, followed by finely textured gold foliage that gradually turns chartreuse as it matures. As new growth emerges, the edges of the leaves take on a beautiful red hue, adding even more dimension. Come fall, red berries appear, making it a wonderful addition to wildlife gardens and providing a pop of color. This North American native is deer-resistant and requires little to no care, though it can be pruned to maintain a smaller size if desired. Perfect for adding beauty and versatility to any landscape!

  • 4-7 feet tall and wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 4-7, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 4-7 feet apart for best results
  • Maintains golden foliage with new growth emerging red from spring to frost
  • Produces big clusters of white flowers in early spring and red berries in the fall
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, landscapes and focal point
  • Resists deer
  • Foliage interest, fall interest, native to North America

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid summer.  Benefits from hard pruning as a young plant to develop a nice full habit. Older plants can be trimmed after flowering, but this will remove the potential for berries to set.

My shipment received

I received the three elderberry in 1 gal pots. One looks very nice but the other two have badly broken limbs off the leader stem. I have cut them back and I hope they will recover and gain some shape. The way they were packed left too much space and I am sure they shifted onto their tops during shipping.

Delivery was quick, however, the size of the 1 gallon plants I received were very disappointing. I would have instead ordered quart size & saved some money. Upon receipt there were also a lot of dead leaves on the plants. With TLC the plants are looking much livelier - still extremely small. Not what I was expecting from Proven Winners.

Thank you for sharing your review of your Lemony Lace® Elderberry. We're sorry to see this! We're happy to replace it or issue store credit if you wish. :) Please respond to this email and let us know which works best for you!

I expected this to come in better shape

I expected this to come in better shape. It had mostly dark crunchy leaves. The weather wasn’t freezing. This had to be shipped that way. I removed the bad leaves and I am going to try to nurse it back. Hopefully it will survive. Elderberry’s are tough plants. I have a Black Lace and an All Laced up that have done really well that I got from Proven Winners Direct.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear about the condition of your elderberry upon arrival. Please email us at HelpDesk@ProvenWinnersDirect.com with photos so we can assist you further. We hope your plant recovers well!😊🌺

A stunning add to rainbow garden!!!

My replacement lemony lace elderberry shrub is absolutely gorgeous!!! She is bright yellow green & full head of lacy leaves!!! She is resting after arrival & will be planted very soon!!! Her garden is very excited to share space with her: a mature weeping pussywillow, a purple smokeshrub & bright pink Ivy geraniums…she is sharing new planted status with tri color echinacea & orange hibiscus…a true rainbow of color for my aunts queer bed!!! Stunning!!!

The shipping got delayed by fedex, but they’re bouncing back great!

The shipping got delayed by fedex, no fault to PWD, and they looked bad, but a week in the shade, with care, they’re perked back up, will hard prune, and get them in their new spots this coming week. Great roots, great plants!

Stems broken during delivery, but likely the plant will survive

Despite being marked Fragile and the top noted, the delivery person put the package on the side and shoved it across the porch. Opened the box, 2/3 plants had broken branches. I put plant supports and planted them, so far so good.

We're sorry to hear about the broken branches on your Lemony Lace® Elderberry during delivery. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at HelpDesk@ProvenWinnersDirect.com.

I dislike being asked for a review when I haven't had the plant long enough or even planted it yet. I like that it did arrive in good condition, though.

So far the Lemony Lace is doing well. This is my third and last attempt to grow. This time I purchased a larger potted Lemony Lace and it seems to be doing much better than its predecessors. My neighbor has one and it is stunning. Fingers crossed we can make it through this heat wave.

Healthy survivor. Deer pulled it all the way out of the ground but it’s replanted and persevering.
