Black Lace® Elderberry has intense purple-black foliage that is finely cut like lace. Its soft pink flowers bloom in early summer then make way for elderberries, which can be harvested when fully ripe for making wine and jam. It attracts birds and resists deer while being tough, adaptable, and growing in a range of challenging conditions. To produce berries, you'll need a companion Black Beauty, Instant Karma, or Laced Up elderberry as a pollinator plant.

  • 6-10 feet tall and wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 4-7, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 6-10 feet apart for best results
  • Maintains finely cut purple-black foliage from spring to frost
  • Produces lacey pink flowers in early summer
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, containers, landscapes, as a focal point
  • Attracts birds and resists deer
  • Foliage interest, fall interest, produces edible berries

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid summer.  Prune after bloom if desired, but this will remove the potential for fruit to set.

Black Lace Elderberry

The 2 black lace elderberry plants arrived in very good condition. They were well packed. They have been in the ground for 2 weeks now and appear to be taking hold, so they appear to be vigorous enough to survive the transportation and the transplanting. Time will tell.

It was in a bit droopy on arrival.

It was in a bit of bad shape, droopy, but it is hot and was in shipping process for a few days. My big challenge is getting them through winter. I'm in zone 6.

Black Lace Elderberry

The plants are looking better now that i have been giving them the TLC they needed after being poorly mishandled by FedEx delivery. When they were delivered, I saw on my doorbell cam that the FedEx driver carried the box, on its side, using his fingers through the holes in the box as handles even though the box was clearly labeled "Live Plants" with arrows pointing up. Judging from the condition the plants were in upon opening the box, I would guess they were handled like this throughout the entire shipping progress. I removed 7 broken limbs, all the mulch that was on top of the soil was all out and loose in the shipping bags and all over the plants. The plants look happy now but very disappointed in how they looked upon arrival. I dont blame Proven Winners for this, the plants were neatly packed, but I would suggest that they find a different shipping company.

It's not doing well

It's not doing well. I started to see sod worms falling right after I planted it. I have been spraying them and my yard, but the plants leaves are all drooping.

The two Black Lace Elderberry plants arrived very quickly. One was a little damaged from shipping, but both appeared to be very healthy. Will be planting them soon.

I love the dark leaves on this plant. Taller then I thought i was going to get for sure which was nice. The tallest stem had to be curved in order to fit which unfortunately was bent/broke. I've tied it to a bamboo stick to see how it does.

Love the look of this plant which I have seen on all the garden shows I watch. I received my plant just a few days ago (about a week) and it is doing great! I planted it in a place that receives morning and early afternoon sun (7am to 1pm). My zone is 8b. The leaves are turning blackish purple and looking so pretty. Also can see some new growth. I had 2 more that I had planted in pots last October from Proven Winners and decided to plant them along the same tree line (each end). Anyway, all are doing great. Hopefully they will survive the heat and humidity of the South! I am up for the challenge!

After a not so pleasant experience ordering this plant through the local big box store's website only to have it sit in a shipping truck over the long, hot labor day weekend even though it was supposed to be delivered before that and receiving a crispy plant, I decided to order direct and see what happened. I placed my order on a Friday thinking it would likely ship early the next week and not have to spend a weekend in a truck. I was very pleasantly surprised when my healthy plant arrived on Sunday. Instructions said to plant it right away so I did and it's doing great in its new home. I can't wait to see it next year.

Thank you for sharing!! Enjoy 😍

Looked like another green/yellow when unboxed but turned dark after planting. Didn’t come with a label like some of the others so I wasn’t sure at first.

As usual, arrived in great condition and after keeping the container in my greenhouse due to a snowy Memorial Day weekend, I finally got to plant it. It is doing great and has lots of new growth.

This is the first time that I’ve ordered from Proven Winners Direct. I was looking to replace an existing black lace elderberry that had been struggling over the last several years. The plant arrived on time, packed very well, and very healthy. I found the instructions that accompanied it to be very helpful. After a week, it really looks fantastic! I will be a returning customer.

Thank you for sharing!! We're so happy to hear that you are enjoying your plant! :)

The Black Lace Elderberry arrived at my house a little like I am after some travel: a little crumpled, a litlte out of sorts, but still together. I let her recover with a bit of water while she rested on our shaded porch for 4 days. I then planted her in the back yard. She looks good and is happy to be in the ground. She came with some new growth and she looks healthy.

Thank you for sharing!! Enjoy :)
