Legend of the Small® is a powerhouse of beauty packed into a petite package! This compact Fothergilla brings the vibrant fall color of its larger cousins but matures at half the size, making it perfect for smaller gardens. In spring, it dazzles with abundant, fragrant, creamy-white bottlebrush flowers that steal the show. By summer, its matte blue-green foliage creates a striking contrast against the rest of your garden. But wait until fall—an explosion of yellow, orange, and red transforms this shrub into a fiery focal point! Ideal for borders, low hedges, and pollinator or wildlife gardens, it’s as functional as it is fabulous.

  • 2-2.5 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 5-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 2-4 feet apart for best results
  • Produces fragrant white bottlebrush shaped flowers throughout spring
  • Maintains blue green foliage spring through summer shifting to shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, edges, landscapes, low hedges, pollinator gardens, wildlife gardens, focal points
  • Attracts bees and resists deer
  • Native to North America, heat tolerant, fall interest, low maintenance

Our deciduous shrubs are entering their natural dormancy phase. As part of this process, foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off—this is completely normal! Shedding leaves helps the plants conserve energy and prepare for the next growing season. Rest assured, your shrubs will wake up and thrive again when it's time in your growing zone. Dormancy is how they prepare for a healthy, vibrant comeback as the seasons change!

Care:  Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring. This plant has an appealing natural habit and is not suited to being cut back or trimmed regularly. If you do wish to prune, do so after flowering in spring.
