Pugster Blue® has full size, fragrant, blue-purple blooms on a compact bush. It blooms non-stop from early summer through frost with true-blue flowers, each with a tiny yellow-orange eye in the center. Thanks to thick, sturdy stems, the Pugster® series offers vastly improved hardiness and winter survival over other types of dwarf butterfly bush. It is drought-tolerant, attracts pollinators, and resists deer and rabbits.

  • 2 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 5-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in full sun (8+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 3-4 feet apart for best results
  • Produces fragrant true-blue flowers with yellow-orange eye summer through fall
  • Maintains green foliage in a mounded habit spring to frost
  • Blooms on new wood
  • Great for borders, containers, edging, groundcover, landscapes, mass planting, as a focal point
  • Attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds while resisting deer and rabbits
  • Heat and drought tolerant, reblooming, deadheading not necessary

Care:  Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring.

Pruning: Prune in spring, after the new growth emerges. Remove weak branches in the middle and about 1/2 to 2/3 of the height and width. Make cuts just about 1/4 of an inch above a bud. Dead or damaged wood can be removed at any time, just cut back to a set of leaves.

Soil: Butterfly bushes need perfect drainage. Their roots are sensitive to rotting, and if they spend any amount of time in wet soil, they can be set back or even die. They can grow in clay soil, but need to be planted a few inches above soil level. This creates a small “hill” that encourages water to drain away from the plant rather than settle around it.

Planting: Never amend the soil when planting a butterfly bush. Amending the soil, particularly clay soil, can cause drainage problems. Avoid mulching directly around your butterfly bush. Mulch is a great idea for other plants, but in clay soil, it can hold too much moisture. Go ahead and mulch your beds, but give your butterfly bush a bit of clearance, and never mulch all the way up to the main stems.

Dormancy: Butterfly bushes tend to be one of the later plants to leaf out in spring. Even if everything else in your landscape is turning green, that doesn’t mean you’ve lost your butterfly bush. If you're worried, try the scratch test. Lightly scratch at a few branches with your fingernail. If there is green underneath, the plant is still alive.

Pugster Blue® Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x)

High hopes but mixed results for this plant. Planted 10 of these as specified in two rows. All in full sun, all receive identical watering. Half have done well, grown and seem healthy with occasional blooms, half have really struggled, with yellow and brown leaves and are haven’t grown at all. Blooms on the healthy ones are wonderfully fragrant and pretty, but why such inconsistency in hardiness. One on the left is approx 18” diameter, one on right same size as when planted 6 months ago

There was literally zero root growth on the plant that I received. It did experience some damage in shipping after I cut off the dead or dying part of the plant. I am left with a literal twig that will probably take 4 years to reach any decent size. So think twice before you order this plant.

I'm disappointed in the perennial shrubs I was sent. Every one of them was wilted and looked dead. I'm not sure any of them will make it. They were planted immediately so we'll see.
They were packaged well and didn't appear to have been damaged in the shipping process. I was just sent sad, subpar plants.

Pugster Blue® Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x)

While pruning this summer, I noticed beautiful flowers and upon investigation, found my Pugster Blue growing ON TOP of the soil right where I'd plunked it after digging it out of the ground a couple of months before when redesigning my beds! I'd gotten sidetracked, left the exposed roots on top of the ground and it was producing nicely. This is one tough shrub! It was doing so well, I simply covered the exposed roots with compost and watched it live its best life the rest of this growing season.

Trudy,

Thank you for sharing!

This is incredible.

We're happy to hear your shrub is tough and resilient, enjoy! :)

Box was bashed in and plant/container had come loose from the “holder”. Shrub was upside down and appeared to have been that way since shipping started. Very disappointed and not like other half of order (in another container.

If I had known they were being shipped from the East Coast to California, I would not have ordered them. They arrived with all flowers brown and dead as well as some crispy leaves and seem root bound. What do I do now? Do I cut off the dead flowers and hope for the best?

I had previously purchased one pugster, and when it bloomed, it was so pretty. There were buds on it. when I got it. I thought I needed some more so I purchased four more which I planted in the ground the next day. Three are doing well. One of them appears to have, one whole section eaten up from some kind of caterpillar on it. I’m not sure if an egg was on it when I got it and it hatched. The other ones look healthy and fine. I’m hoping they grow up to look like the picture.

Thank you for sharing!! Enjoy :) We recommend applying a repellent.
