Lemony Lace® Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa)

Our shrubs are currently going dormant. The foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off. During dormancy, plants go inactive to conserve their energy for the next growing season. This happens naturally as seasons change!

Lemony Lace® Elderberry is a striking and low-maintenance shrub that brings vibrant color and texture to your garden. In spring, it produces large clusters of white flowers, followed by finely textured gold foliage that gradually turns chartreuse as it matures. As new growth emerges, the edges of the leaves take on a beautiful red hue, adding even more dimension. Come fall, red berries appear, making it a wonderful addition to wildlife gardens and providing a pop of color. This North American native is deer-resistant and requires little to no care, though it can be pruned to maintain a smaller size if desired. Perfect for adding beauty and versatility to any landscape!

  • 4-7 feet tall and wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 4-7, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 4-7 feet apart for best results
  • Maintains golden foliage with new growth emerging red from spring to frost
  • Produces big clusters of white flowers in early spring and red berries in the fall
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, landscapes and focal point
  • Resists deer
  • Foliage interest, fall interest, native to North America

Our deciduous shrubs are entering their natural dormancy phase. As part of this process, foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off—this is completely normal! Shedding leaves helps the plants conserve energy and prepare for the next growing season. Rest assured, your shrubs will wake up and thrive again when it's time in your growing zone. Dormancy is how they prepare for a healthy, vibrant comeback as the seasons change!

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer. Benefits from hard pruning as a young plant to develop a nice full habit. Older plants can be trimmed after flowering.
