Splendid!™ Blue Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Our shrubs are currently going dormant. The foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off. During dormancy, plants go inactive to conserve their energy for the next growing season. This happens naturally as seasons change!

Should the plants in your garden be ornamental or useful? Why not both! With Splendid!™ Blue highbush blueberry, you get a handsome landscape plant with a rounded habit and dusty light blue foliage. That view is joined by an impressive show of tiny white, bell-shaped blooms in the spring. Later on, those flowers turn to extremely tasty fruit, even if there isn’t a compatible pollinator plant nearby. But note that you will definitely get a heavier fruit set if you plant another highbush blueberry nearby.

  • 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 6-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 3-4 feet apart for best results
  • Maintains a mounded, conveniently-sized habit with handsome, dusty blue to green foliage spring to frost
  • Produces small, white, bell-shaped flowers in spring that give way to tasty blueberries in summer through fall
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, containers, edging, landscapes, mass plantings, focal points, edible gardens, low hedges
  • Attracts both bees and butterflies
  • Produces edible berries, foliage interest, fall interest, heat tolerant

Our deciduous shrubs are entering their natural dormancy phase. As part of this process, foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off—this is completely normal! Shedding leaves helps the plants conserve energy and prepare for the next growing season. Rest assured, your shrubs will wake up and thrive again when it's time in your growing zone. Dormancy is how they prepare for a healthy, vibrant comeback as the seasons change!

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer. Will get its brightest foliage color when planted in full sun. It benefits from rejuvenation pruning. After it has been planted in the landscape for 4-6 years you can start removing the oldest stems each year in the springtime. Please note: Though Splendid! Blue blueberry is an ornamental variety, it will set some fruit on its own. For larger, more abundant fruit, plant with another highbush blueberry.
