The new Sting® Arborvitae is a thrilling statement plant. It literally looks like an exclamation point in the landscape, and it takes up less than 2 square feet of space! You get all the interest a 20 foot tall plant has to offer and you’ll still have space for close companion planting. This narrow evergreen offers a totally unique way to bring structure to your space as a foundation plant, a space-saving hedge, and of course, as an individual statement plant.

  • 15-20 feet tall and 12-18 inches wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 3-8, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 12-18 inches apart for best results
  • Maintains upright columnar green foliage year-round
  • Great for landscapes, as a specimen or focal point
  • Native to North America, fall interest, winter interest, evergreen

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer. Prune in spring before new growth begins if desired. Best growth is in moderately moist, cool, fertile soils. Tolerates heat and drought once established. Keep watered after pruning to minimize browning.

Sting® Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis)

I trenched in eight of these as a thin hedge spacing them a foot part. I didn’t realize about half of them were defective until I had backfilled them lightly and went to straighten them up before finishing the backfill and snugging them in. They suffer from leaning trunk likely from improper growing conditions and care. I’ve never seen this issue before so I didn’t even think to check earlier in the process. Since I already put my labor into them I’m going to leave them with the trunk plumb and see how well and how quickly the young arborvitae can right itself on its own.

Ironically this was also a rare occasion I did a 100% native soil backfill, ND clay… so a ton of extra work with that material.

I suspect the cultivar itself is fine, but you would be better off sourcing these from a seller that doesn’t ship out defective units; in any case definitely inspect for this type of defect right away.

I added a photo so you can see the worst happen to be to the right, the final one is a bit comical.

Thank you for sharing your review of your Sting® Arborvitaes. We're sorry to see this! We're happy to replace or issue store credit for the leaning ones if you wish. :) Please respond to this email and let us know how many are leaning and which option works best for you!

Sincerely,
