Tips for growing caladiums from bulbs:
- How to plant: caladium bulbs will have a knobbly top side that will be painted white. This side goes up when planting! Plants bulbs 1.5-2.5" deep. If you are planting Jumbo size bulbs, plant 1 per sq. ft. If you are planting #1 size bulbs, plant 2 per sq. ft.
- When to plant: when your soil is 60-70°. If planting in a Northern climate, bulbs can be started indoors in a warm moist environment to give them a head start.
- Where to plant: caladiums are very shade tolerant! While there are some varieties that can handle sun, caladiums are known for bringing a pop of color to the shadiest corners of your garden. Make sure to plant in an area with moist, well-draining soil.
- How to store after the season? While caladiums are considered an annual in most zones, you can dig them up and re-plant next year. Begin digging if your temperatures stay consistently under 60° with foliage still attached. Let them dry in a well ventilated area for about a week before cutting off the foliage to about 1 in. If you are leaving the bulbs in a container for next year, move the container inside somewhere above 60° and stop watering when foliage starts to fall over. At this time, remove all leaves and bring container back outside next season when temperatures remain above 60°.
- Which size is right for you? Choose Jumbo size bulbs to get larger, fuller plants faster. Choose #1 size bulbs if your growing season is long and they will have plenty of time to mature. The sizes of caladium bulbs vary naturally by variety, so not every jumbo sized bulb you receive will look the same. Generally, Jumbo size bulbs are about 2.5 to 3.5" in diameter, while #1 size bulbs range from 1.5 to 2.5".
