Add a touch of elegance to your landscape with the Fine Line® buckthorn! With its delicate, feathery, fern-like green foliage, this plant transforms into a stunning golden-yellow in the fall, offering a beautiful seasonal transition. Not only is it deer resistant, but it also produces charming non-edible berries. Whether placed in a narrow hedgerow for added privacy, as a unique accent plant, or in a patio container, Fine Line brings vertical grace to any space. Its slender form is perfect for framing entrances or adding a sophisticated vertical touch to your perennial garden.

  • 5-7 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 2-7, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 2-4 feet apart for best results
  • Maintains green foliage summer through fall when it turns golden yellow
  • Great for borders, containers, landscapes, mass plantings
  • Resists deer
  • Foliage interest, fall interest, drought tolerant, non-invasive
  • Shrubs shipped Nov-Apr will arrive dormant; shrubs shipped Apr-Oct will arrive green or in bloom

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid summer.  Little pruning is required. In general, avoid any severe pruning or cutting back, as recovery will be slow. Any errant branches can be removed as needed. If you wish to grow it as a clipped hedge, you may, but it is necessary to keep on the process, as cuts into branches pencil-thickness or larger are slow to recover from. Any pruning should be done in late spring, and keep well-watered during recovery.

I ordered 3 quart sized shrubs last year in May and it now September, so it has gone through two growing seasons and has probably tripled in size. I have kept them in containers in full sun in Kentucky 7a and they have thrived! I love them!

This shrub is now planted in three spots in our yard. The last one we purchased is looking beautiful and is quickly catching up with the two I planted in 2022. Our space is tight, so these vertical shrubs are perfect for our landscape.

Barbara,

Thank you for sharing!!

We're happy to hear you are enjoying your shrubs, and that they are the perfect choice for your garden :)

I have had three of these Buckthorn's for 6 growing seasons now, they are all doing well. They are over 6 feet tall and have done beautifully each year. I ordered another one last year that has done well and grown a few inches this year. I will be ordering more. They make a nice focal point in a bed of shorter flowers, they also have nice texture. I will say, don't let the low rating fool you, some people think that because a pest eats their plant that they should rate the plant itself low, these are the great quality plant I have always gotten from PW.

Amy,
Thank you for sharing!! Enjoy :)

I was very surprised by the quality and health of these plants. I love them! Unfortunately something else does also, one of them was cut in half by some critter. They are all doing fine though. Thank you.

James,
Thank you for sharing!! Enjoy :) We recommend applying neem oil, or Dr. Bronners soap mixed with water and apply few times a week.

Considering the size of the container and the purchase price, I expected a tree taller than 10 inches. It was packaged very well and it looks healthy so we’ll see how it does this growing season. For the money though, I was expecting a bit more. The local nursery last year had 2 and a half footers for the same price.

Waded,

Maggie,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us!! We're so happy that your plants have arrived at their new home. :) Our quart-sized shrubs ship between 5-8 inches at shipment.

Enjoy!!
