Winecraft Black® Smokebush is a striking and versatile landscape plant. In spring, its round leaves emerge in a rich purple hue, transitioning to a deep, near-black tone as the summer heat sets in. Come fall, the foliage explodes in a brilliant display of reds and oranges. In early summer, large, soft panicles of bloom appear, evolving into the signature "smoke" effect that makes this plant so beloved. With is naturally rounded, dwarf habit, it is an ideal choice for gardens of all sizes. Perfect for adding dramatic color and texture, this unique plant fits seamlessly into any landscape. 

  • 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 4-8, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 6-8 feet apart for best results

I ordered around 20 plants. All came beautifully packaged and in good shape.m except for the smoke bush. It was in a dry pot and its leaves were shriveled. I placed it I. Called light and watered it for about a week. It did not improve. I think the root system was not well developed and so getting dry during shipment did it in. This plant was the smallest of all as well, less than the size of my hand. I did plant it in hopes it does something but I’m pretty sure it is dead. All the other plants I ordered are doing beautifully.

Very nice size and structure. Kept it under lights for a week due to frost warnings. Began to leaf out but as soon as planted out and the leaves are shifting from green to purple. I have great hope for this plant.

Poor plant. Good shape but only 2 leaves on arrival. Kept in shade on my morning porch but no leaves now

Please plant once your last threat of frost has passed. Our shrubs are still arriving dormant (no foliage) if you live in a warmer climate, plant it

Just purchased 2 PW Black Smokebush Shrubs from local nursery. I'm a little confused as to why the PW tag states 3'-4' tall & wide but on the PW website, it states 8'-10' tall and 6'-8' wide. That extra footage shown on the website makes all the difference as to where I plant these. Regardless, I'm still stoked I have them but the non-clarity in size is a bit frustrating.

Very strange… Second year in the ground and the entire center of the bush has no leaves on the stems. Blooming beautifully at the top and new growth growing at the bottom? Frustrated as it looks so beautiful in the pictures! Any recommendations??

Horrible! Plants arrived all broken and dirt everywhere. Box looks like it had been dropped and kicked around. FedEx guy even made the comment of “There’s a lot of mulch coming out of this box.”
