'Sweet Summer Love Clematis' from Proven Winners® has it all: the flowers, the fragrance, the sturdiness, the ease of growth and the drama for your garden. Cranberry-violet blooms start in July in the Midwest and Northeast and last until mid-September. 

  • 10 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 4-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 6-10 feet apart for best results
  • Produces fragrant cranberry-violet flowers throughout summer

Care: Best in full sun or light shade, keep base and roots completely shaded. "Feet in the shade, head in the sun" is a saying you may have heard for successfully growing clematis, so plant it where the vine gets sunshine, but the roots stay cool. You can accomplish this with mulch, or by shading the root zone with a nearby shrub or perennial. Requires well-drained soil. Hard prune to 2 feet in spring as new growth emerges. Leave at least two pairs of buds on each stem.  Fertilize with Proven Winners® Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and midsummer.

Frankly disappointed. The clematis arrived looking poorly. I’ve planted it but not sure it will survive. I didn’t realize that PW Direct is separate from PW online. My experience with the latter was much better. Will not order from PW direct again.

I ordered 5 different plants and they all look pretty good except this one. It's very spindly and only has one small branch coming out of the soil and that looks like it is barely hanging on. I think this store is really good about replacing plants that aren't healthy.
