Taste of Heaven™ Thornless Blackberry (Rubus ponca)

Our shrubs are currently going dormant. The foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off. During dormancy, plants go inactive to conserve their energy for the next growing season. This happens naturally as seasons change!

When compared to average berries from the store, Taste of Heaven™ Blackberry brings this long-time favorite fruit to new heights. The berries of this thornless shrub are consistently sweet with just enough tang, and a rich full flavor that is a joy to eat! These blackberries are wonderful plain and fresh from the garden, as well as an excellent addition to pies, jams, and beverages– anywhere you want a delectable berry taste! Thanks to its sturdy canes and smaller size, Taste of Heaven can be grown without a trellis, and in more places than other varieties. This floricane blackberry (fruits on the second year canes) performs best and produces the highest yield in full sun, but will still produce fruit even in the shade– something uncommon for fruit plants! With a long fruiting season, early ripening, and a unique habit; this shrub is an excellent choice for your containers, edging, pollinator gardens, edible gardens, and more.

  • 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 5-8, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 2-3 apart for best results
  • Maintains green foliage spring through summer
  • Produces white flowers in spring that will turn into delicious berries later in the season
  • Blooms on old wood
  • Great for borders, containers, landscapes
  • Attracts bees, birds and butterflies
  • Thornless, edible berries, long fruiting harvest

Our deciduous shrubs are entering their natural dormancy phase. As part of this process, foliage is turning colors, drying out, and falling off—this is completely normal! Shedding leaves helps the plants conserve energy and prepare for the next growing season. Rest assured, your shrubs will wake up and thrive again when it's time in your growing zone. Dormancy is how they prepare for a healthy, vibrant comeback as the seasons change!

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer. Taste of Heaven will produce the best tasting and highest yield in full sun. Do not allow to dry out during flower or fruit development. Taste of Heaven blackberry is a floricane blackberry, which means it only develops fruit on second-year canes in summer. In year one, canes emerge from the crown of the plant and grow tall and leafy; these are known as primocanes. In year two, those same canes are now called floricanes, which flower, fruit, then die. On an established plant, there will always be a mix of primocanes and floricanes so you will get fruit every year. Plants should be pruned three times each year:
