Ground Hug® Aronia is a true problem-solver—perfect for covering challenging spots where other plants struggle. This low-growing native shrub forms a dense mat of foliage that suppresses weeds, handles tough conditions with ease, and delivers year-round visual interest.

In spring, it offers clusters of white flowers that attract a variety of pollinators. These blooms give way to rich black-purple berries by late summer. But its most dramatic moment comes in fall, when the foliage lights up in brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow—an unforgettable finale to the growing season.

Hardy and adaptable, Ground Hug® thrives in sun or part shade. While flowering and fall color are best in full sun, it remains a dependable, attractive option even in less-than-ideal spots. Ecologically valuable groundcover that pulls double duty as a pollinator plant and ornamental standout, Ground Hug® Aronia delivers.

  • 8-14 inches tall and 3 feet wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 3-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in part sun to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Space plants 3 feet apart for best results
  • Produces white flowers in that spring that give way to dark black-purple berries in late summer
  • Maintains green foliage in spring and summer that lights up in fall with tones of red, orange and yellow
  • Great for edges, ground cover, landscapes and mass planting
  • Fall interest, foliage interest, heat tolerant, drought tolerant, salt tolerant, native to North America

Care:  Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer.Aronia blooms on old wood, so if pruning is required, it should be pruned immediately after flowering. Do note, however, that this will remove the potential for fruit to form. If you need to manage the spread of the plant, that can be done as needed.
