Add 'Apple Slices' Spigelia to your garden for a splash of deep wine-red blooms and a whole lot of hummingbird charm! This native wildflower bursts into tubular flowers in late spring and early summer, staying in bloom for weeks and attracting pollinators like a magnet.

Versatile and easy to grow, Spigelia thrives in everything from dappled shade to full sun (just keep it watered in hotter spots). It’s a long-lived perennial that cleans up after itself—old blooms drop off naturally, keeping the plant fresh and tidy. Naturally found in Eastern U.S. woodlands and along streambanks, Spigelia is still rare in gardens—but not for long. Gardeners are catching on to its beauty, toughness, and pollinator power.

  • 18-22 inches tall and 16-18 inches wide at maturity
  • Hardy in zones 5b-9, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
  • Plant in sun or shade
  • Space plants 16-18 inches apart for best results
  • Produces dark, wine-red tubular flowers from late spring to mid summer
  • Maintains green foliage from spring to frost
  • Great for containers, cut flowers, landscapes, mass planting and focal point
  • Attracts bees and hummingbirds
  • Native to North America, long blooming, deadheading not necessary

Care: Fertilize with Proven Winners® Continuous Release Fertilizer in spring. Easy to grow in most soils but is best in rich, moist soils with good drainage. Thrives in both full sun and partial shade. Filtered sun is recommended in southern regions.
