This elegant dwarf tree fern brings a unique architectural presence to the garden with its rosette of bright green, arching fronds attached to a short trunk. Native to rainforests, it enjoys warm, humid weather, consistent moisture and shade cast from taller plants above. This fern grows well in containers and can be brought indoors for winter to be enjoyed as a houseplant.
This tree fern is 3 to 4 feet tall. The fronds are bright green. It can be grown outdoors year-round in zones 10 and 11, but otherwise it can be used as a houseplant. In zones 9 and lower, move the plant outdoors for the summer and then bring it indoors as a houseplant for the winter or treat it as a houseplant all year.
- 36-48 inches tall and 24-36 inches wide at maturity
- Annual except in zones 10-11, be sure to check your USDA zone to ensure success
- Plant in part to full shade (4 or less hours daily)
- Space plants 24-36 inches apart for best results
- Maintains bright green foliage spring through frost
- Great for containers, bright and humid spaces
- Prefers bright light indoors, but does not like direct midday sun
- Adaptable as houseplant, foliage interest
Outdoor Care: When actively growing outdoors, fertilize once a month with Proven Winners Water Soluble Plant Food. Water only once the top layer of soil is dry. Overwatering will cause root issues.
Indoor Care:
- For optimal performance, keep at 60-85°F (15-29°C).
- Prefers moist, well drained soil with partial shade outdoors and bright light indoors.
- Water your silver fern once the top inch of the soil in your container is dry.
- Never allow potting mix to dry out completely. This can rapidly cause many brown leaf edges. Water as soon as the surface of the potting mix feels mostly dry.
- Do not expose it to direct sun this will damage the plant.
