'Coffee Cups' is a dark-stemmed tropical beauty that truly lives up to its name! The large, dark green cupped leaves will collect rainwater (not coffee!) until there's enough that stem bends under the weight, pouring water out. The medium-tall height allows for a wide range of planting options and the ability to create amazing layered looks. This award winning, tightly-clumped tropical grows as an annual in most zones but can be planted as a perennial in zones 8 through 11.

This highly sought-after container size for annuals provides immediate impact upon planting because they are grown in a larger container. They were created for gardeners who are looking to fill in their landscapes and not have to wait as long for them to catch up to other plants in the same area. They also work extremely well when planted alone in 10" - 12" containers or as Thrillers for combinations in 16" and larger planters!

  • 36-60 inches tall and spreads up to 30-48 inches at maturity
  • Plant in part to full sun (4+ hours daily)
  • Grow in zones 8-11

Care: According to the Humane Society of America Colocasia plants can be toxic to pets. This is means that the plants are generally identified as having the capability for producing a toxic reaction. This plant is not edible and can be harmful to humans if ingested.

These are durable plants that will perform best with moist to wet soil, but can tolerate some drought stress. Drought stress will negatively affect the appearance of the plant. Colocasia form tubers and these tubers can be stored for replanting in the spring. To dig and store tubers follow these directions. First, allow frost to kill the top of the plant then cut back the stems and dig the tubers. Wash off any soil and then allow the tubers to dry. Wrap dry tubers in newspapers or pack them in peat moss. Label each tuber or group of tubers so you know what they are come spring. Store tubers in a dark, cool (35 to 45 F) place. Do not allow tubers to freeze.

Captivating Coffee Cups!

This is one of the most entertaining plants in my garden. Watching how the leaves collect the rain and divert it down the stems right to the roots is captivating! Mother Nature is amazing!
